Chapter 5

Scarlett

I blink several times as my vision adjusts, the cozy room coming into focus. For a moment, I forget everything and expect solitude. Then I feel the warmth of a body next to mine, and everything comes rushing back – the passion developing between us, the attack, being rescued, him being a werewolf, and then somehow, he healed me.

A whirlwind of events brought this mysterious stranger Luke here to my isolated cabin—and my bed—on this snowy Christmas Eve morning. His arm is wrapped protectively around my torso, his body a wall of warmth against me. I feel the steady rise and fall of Luke's chest, his breath tickling the sensitive skin at the nape of my neck. My pulse quickens.

I can’t help but smile and feel warm inside, despite the icy winter atmosphere outside. Just a few days ago, I was content with being alone. But now, everything has changed. The walls I had built around my heart have crumbled. It's all because of this mysterious werewolf with wise eyes and a smile that makes even the coldest days feel warmer...

Studying Luke’s sleeping face, tenderness overwhelms me for this kind man who saved and tended to me. I slowly brush back a lock of his hair, my heart overflowing.

Luke looks utterly peaceful, his handsome features so relaxed and calm, dark lashes fanning across his sculpted cheekbones. He truly is beautiful in a rugged, masculine way that speaks to my inner she-wolf's desire to protect and nurture a worthy mate. The sight of him sends a spike of protectiveness through me—mine, my wolf rumbles groggily, still emerging from slumber. For the first time in a very long time, I don’t try to suppress my wolf, instead, it feels natural and supportive instead of something I want to run and hide from.

Luke stirs awake with a drowsy smile lighting up his whole face at the sight of me which leaves me breathless. "Scarlett, you are still here…" Luke murmurs, his voice a gritty rasp still thick with sleep that sends delicious tingles dancing down my nerve endings. I shiver involuntarily and Luke's grin widens, turning even more devastatingly knee-weakening if that's at all possible.

"How are you feeling?" He asks gently, lifting my hand to brush his lips tenderly across my knuckles. Such a seemingly simple act of affection has my eyes suddenly blurring with ridiculous tears. When was the last time I allowed myself such vulnerability with another living soul or received such selfless tenderness in return? The memory eludes me. I bite my lip and nod, not yet trusting my voice. A calloused thumb sweeps away the single escaped droplet to splash softly on my pillowcase.

Luke's expression clouds with concern. "Are you in any pain, baby? Your wounds...should I take another look?"

I shake my head quickly, a lump forming in my throat even as warmth spreads through me. Luke's first thoughts are of my well-being, unlike the harshness I've known.

No, it's not pain," I say, feeling a warm flush on my cheeks.
